13 helpful tips for your moving day
A big day is upon us. We’ve compiled our 13 best tips gleaned from our experiences, moving hundreds of customers to give you the best possible experience.
These actions will prepare you for success on your moving day. Be aware that you’re not alone. If you’re moving using Local Moving Geeks, our customer support team will always assist you and ensure your move is an enjoyable experience. If you encounter any unexpected issues during the day, make sure you have our contact number in your pocket and call us. We’ll always be able to back up from our experienced team.
1. Make sure you have plenty of time before when your truck arrives.
Moving Day flies by faster than a typical day. Whatever time you’re anticipating to finish done before when our team arrives, increase it by. This could mean getting up early to get a cup of coffee in or take your kids to school or a sitter, and making sure your pets are secured or left with a neighbor so that they’re not rushing out the front door while furniture’s being moved. It’s a good idea to keep an extra pen and notepad in the house to make any last-minute reminders.
2. Final packing items.
There are many items to hand for the final night of our lives – toothbrushes and cellphone chargers, hand wash, medications, pillows, and toilet paper blankets. These are the essential items you’ll need to have at hand when you get there, so keep them all together and ensure you have the right boxes or suitcases before you move to carry them. (If not, taking a couple of additional packages can be a solution the moving team will be ready for). After you’ve packed everything things away, place your suitcase in a secure location during the time the door to your home is open. Also, ensure it’s not tangled with items loaded onto the truck.
3. Clean up the area.
Is the fridge full of milk? Check the bathroom, kitchen, and every bedroom, then sweep all over them before when you wait until the truck arrives. Paper towels and the surface spray you’ll use for the final clean-up will likely help you as you reach the other end of the road, so make sure you pack the items after you’ve finished. Keep the mop in your bag to do one final sweep before the team departs. We have friends who open the lid on older stoves and inspect under the hotplates. It’s worth taking a look, just in case you haven’t done so already. Renters ‘ tip: we suggest keeping an abrasive cleaner and sponge eraser on hand for any area of cleaning walls or doors where marks can be more evident after the property has been cleared of boxes.
4. Make sure you have completed your final arrangements.
Write a note with your forwarding address to the new owner and the super if you didn’t arrange it with your Post Service. This is also true for utilities. If you haven’t yet notified them, you should make a note to contact them as soon as possible. If you’re planning on leaving tips to your moving team, Make sure you have enough cash available or go to an ATM to withdraw before they arrive.
5. Make sure to keep an ear open for our phone.
It is likely that your team made up of movers, will inform you when they’re headed to your home, so make sure that your ring tone is set and ensure you have your phone on hand. If you’ve got an adapter for charging your mobile phone, today is the perfect day to ensure it’s handy. Check the street for the conditions and let them know of any changes.
6. Meet the removalists and make sure that they arrive on time and have safe access to the property.
Review any essential elements of information. Do you work in a doorman’s building? Are you in a Co-Op with a hyper-vigilant team? Perhaps there is a service entry that the team requires? Our team of removalists is seasoned experts, but nobody knows your home like you do. Keep an eye out for any difficulties or questions when we arrive. We’ll review the plan after we’ve entered your home and ensure everyone is on the same project. The inventory list will be reviewed, and sign in with your team. The most vigilant supers will often come by during a move and observe how it’s moving along and keep an eye out for any concerns they may have that your movers aren’t able to be able to.
7. Let’s do it.
Now, all you need to do is let us do the heavy lifting. This is where we truly shine. Do not be shy to ask for concerns or suggestions. We are here to help the day one of your move days. We want to see you happy and excited about the significant change in your life. During this process phase, you’ll also receive phone contact from the Customer Success team. You’ll be able to inquire about any other questions or get encouragement.
8. Confirm your departure time for your destination.
As we close the truck loading, you may think about giving those who will be meeting you at your new location an alert that you’ll be making a move shortly. Make sure you have the mobile number that belongs to your relocation team in case there are any unexpected traffic problems or delays in the process. Confirm that the meeting time is set if someone is meeting you at your new residence with keys.
9. Ensure you secure your former home thoroughly before moving out.
Make sure to lock doors and windows. Make that final sweep that guarantees you will not be delayed in receiving your bond refunded. You can leave the keys according to your agreement with the building or landlord. Tips for renters: Take photos of the state of each space before you go out.
10. Arrive at your truck at the point of departure.
We’re in the home stage, but your removalists are following the same arriving and entry procedure on this side of the spectrum. After you’ve allowed access, the removalists will work with you to decide where to place all your boxes and furniture as they unload. Tenants’ tip: Take photos of your property in good condition to record your progress and identify any issues you need to report to the building’s management.
11. Check that your utilities are running.
Electricity, hot water, and WiFi are the most important things to consider to ensure your first night is not stressful. It is an ideal time to determine if the house is secured to allow for the arrival of pets or young children, i.e., check fencing, gates, windows, and access points. Be sure to verify these before arrival and then jump on the phone if you have to make any adjustments.
12. Take a moment to sign off and dance that dance!
When your removalists have completed unloading the truck, they’ll take an inspection with you and ensure everything is in place. If you’re employing Local Moving Geeks for your move, a most senior member of the Executive Team will jump on the phone with you to ensure that there’s nothing more we can assist you with. You can then accept the final document and give a tip to your team for your satisfaction with the job they did.
13. The setup.
A first mop and clean is a good start, but we all know these boxes will take some time. We suggest organizing your bedrooms as the priority. Also, wipe down surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen to make it easier to utilize the areas. There’s an enormous task ahead; your bag with essentials like phone chargers and medications will keep the conditions at hand. The first few days can be chaotic as you search for everything you need, so be slow on yourself. If you have to complete any changes of address agreements (see the moving Day list here for some tips), keep a list of these to meet them as quickly as possible, including financial institutions, your license and registration, and the Postal Service and subscriptions. In a short time, everything is running smoothly. Try to enjoy what we refer to as the ‘camping phase.’
